The chair of the Cumberland County Greens, Jacqui Deveneau, voiced her concerns about the militarization of space at the second annual Maine Space Conference, held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland and organized by Maine Space 2030. Standing outside the venue, Deveneau and fellow protesters held signs reading “Stop Weaponizing Space,” and “Rocket Launches Pollute,” highlighting the potential environmental damage caused by space launches and the dangers of extending warfare to space. “Maine has a rich history of environmental activism, and we cannot allow our state to be complicit in this dangerous pursuit,” she said.
The Greens are calling on the state of Maine and the federal government to redirect funding away from military-driven space projects and towards initiatives that prioritize peace and sustainability. They urge the public to join their call for a shift towards peaceful space exploration and a world free from the threat of space-based weapons.
